Alexander Technique

The Alexander Technique was discovered by an Australian by the name of Frederick Matthias Alexander as a way to improve body posture and movement to reduce physical and mental tension. It is a simple, effective method that enhances movement ease, balance, alignment, flexibility and coordination in all activity. Alexander (1869-1955), an actor, invented the Alexander Technique after he saw a connection between losing his voice and his posture.

Alexander discovered that by changing the way he stood and how he held his neck and head, he was able to regain full use of his strained vocal cords permanently and noticed the side benefit of greatly improved health and physical co-ordination. Alexander later established a training school for this technique in London in 1931, a school which still teaches to this day. Today, over 100 years after it’s discovery, it has become integrated into many music colleges, dance and drama schools.

Alexander Technique Example PostureThe Alexander Technique is a type of physical therapy designed to take care of things like back pain, stiff necks and shoulders. The theory and practice behind Alexander's work are simple, although it takes a number of one-to-one sessions with a teacher to retrain the body to stand and react in healthier ways.

Working in conjunction with a teacher, a person goes through a series of exercises to re-educate the body to stand and move in different ways. At the first session, your trainer evaluates your stance, and then helps you to align your body, head and neck into new postures. To start with, it feels unnatural, but you gain immediate benefits, even after the first session.

A typical lesson in the Alexander technique is from 30-50 minutes and is taught through a series of weekly one-to-one lessons with a qualified teacher. It can take as many as 30 sessions to complete your posture changes for good, but this commitment of time and energy has lasting beneficial effects, especially in improving physical performance.

Other benefits include improved coordination, reduction of neck, back and head aches, and greater self-esteem as a result of a more positive way of moving through life. Widely acclaimed, the Alexander Technique is practiced by performers, athletes, and business professionals.

The Alexander Technique is today recognized to be one of the most sophisticated and powerful methods of personal transformation available. However, Learning the Alexander Technique is an incremental process, and discoveries come little by little as your use improves. It’s an innovative method that helps us become aware of and transform our harmful habits.
